One of the most legendary off-road vehicles is the Jeep, but even Mercedes-Benz has an off-road model—the Unimog (surprising, right?). In fact, many car manufacturers produce at least one vehicle capable of tackling mud, even if it's not specifically marketed for such adventures or available in the United States. Off-road vehicles have actually existed almost as long as cars themselves, with the first models customized for Czar Nicholas II of Russia in the early 1900s. These vehicles, a Rolls Royce and a Packard, were adapted by inventor Adolphe Kegresse using what became known as the Kegresse track, a flexible rubber belt system. Kegresse took his innovation to France in 1931, and off-road history was made. After World War II, off-road vehicles surged in popularity as surplus Army Jeeps entered the market. Once people experienced the thrill of a muddy trail, there was no turning back.
